I’ve been fighting a constantly full hard disk on my Powerbook like a cold that won’t go away. It seems that for no reason at all it reports “startup disk almost full!” I delete a bunch of stuff solving the problem only to have it report “startup disk full” again. Logging out and then logging back in gains back gigs of space. Which is space unclaimed from memory paging all day with 29 apps open.
Re-logging-out-in several times a day really doesn’t solve the problem. I needed to go hunting. Here’s what I found.
Apple installs all kinds of stuff to help you with Final Cut Studio. You have to ask why? In one folder alone there was nearly 5 gig of video and images for Motion. There’s not going to be any project I’ll do that will use that. D-E-L-E-T-E-D! Watch those files be a massively dumb form of copy protection. Stand by for the KAAAAHN! scream.
I wondered how many gigs music was taking up space and found that it wasn’t much for as much as there was. But what was really taking up tons were podcasts. Between them all they used a mighty 5 gig of space. I’ve found that I never listen to a show after I listen to it. If I could delete files from my iPod that would work all that much better. Here’s yet another vote for a D-E-L-E-T-E-D! button feature function. Oh well. Without it I’ll just I need to get into the habit of making them go away afterward.
